For those children whose mother or father is in the military and deployed in a dangerous part of the world, the waiting and worrying really can’t be described. Yet, amazingly, life goes on with the ups and downs of friendships, and the thrill of new crushes. Julia and her same-age niece Eliza are best friends, and while Julia’s mother is serving as a nurse in Iraq, the two girls are spending the summer together. Nearly every day, they head up the mountain to the old-fashioned resort Eliza’s dad manages. Often, the girls use their imaginations and pretend they are in the past, and the story sometimes slips into the conversations young girls at the turn of the last century might have. Then along comes Michael, and everything changes for Julia whose constant worry and fear for her mother is never far from her thoughts. A thoughtful book.
