Pearl’s mom may have named her after a rare and valuable gem, but she sure doesn’t treats her this way. In fact, only her grandfather Gus, who Pearl and her mother Lexie live with, seems to really care about her. Strangely, Gus and Lexie almost seem to hate each other. Pearl finds comfort in her best friend, Henry and his mom. The mystery of Pearl’s missing dad, and the nastiness between Gus and Lexie unravels when Gus dies suddenly. This story has a lot to say about accepting those who are different from you, and the tragic consequences that can happen when you don’t–even when those involved are members of your own family. Pearl is available through the Atlantic County Library.
