Gianna is a middle schooler who is disorganized and forgetful, but a great runner, a terrific artist and a caring granddaughter. In this really well-written story, Gianna is struggling to complete a leaf project for Science class and bring up her grade. If she doesn’t, she won’t get to compete in the Sectionals, a race that she desperately wants to be part of. A couple of obnoxious mean girls, one who wants Gianna’s spot in the race for herself, make things as tough as possible. Added to that, Gianna’s wonderful grandmother has started getting very forgetful and that brings another kind of trouble to the family. Fortunately, Gianna is a strong, determined girl with a good guy friend, and she’s determined to do her best, her way. The author Kate Messner is a former middle school teacher and has created very believable characters and a story that’s full of twists and turns that will keep a lot of readers interested.
